The Victron Energy VDI-32 Galvanic Isolator — is a highly reliable device designed to protect the metal parts of yachts, boats, and motorhomes from destructive electrochemical (galvanic) corrosion. This problem occurs when connecting to a shore power network due to stray currents in the common grounding conductor. The VDI-32 reliably blocks constant leakage currents while fully maintaining the functionality of all circuit breakers and RCDs.
Why is a galvanic isolator necessary?
When a vessel is connected to a shore line, the single grounding loop creates a galvanic pair between the boat and the earth. Microcurrents flowing through this pair cause the rapid destruction of expensive metal parts located in the water (propellers, shafts, hulls). The Victron VDI-32 isolator breaks the DC circuit, preventing corrosion, but freely passes AC at 50/60 Hz, which is necessary to trigger safety systems in emergencies.
Key advantages and features
- Effective corrosion protection: an inexpensive and compact alternative to massive isolation transformers.
- Safety: the device does not interfere with the operation of earth leakage circuit breakers (RCDs) and short circuit protection.
- Maintenance-free: the device contains no moving parts and does not require regular service.
- Passive cooling: a massive anodized aluminum radiator provides excellent heat dissipation without the use of noisy fans.
- Marine certification: fully complies with strict shipbuilding safety standards.
