Victron Energy VDI-16 Galvanic Isolator - GDI000016000

For what purpose is a galvanic isolator used?
It is installed to prevent destructive galvanic corrosion of the hull of a boat or camper. This occurs when connected to shore power due to stray currents flowing in the ground bus.

What is the difference between a galvanic isolator and an isolation transformer?
An isolator effectively blocks direct parasitic currents in the ground loop, but does not provide complete galvanic isolation of the entire system, like a transformer does. At the same time, it is significantly more compact, more affordable, and solves most typical problems.

Does the isolator prevent the RCD from tripping?
Not at all. The Victron VDI-16 model seamlessly passes 50/60 Hz alternating current, which is a prerequisite for the normal operation of protective automation.

Do I need to ground the system after installing the device?
Certainly. The galvanic isolator is mounted in the break of the ground wire, while the body of the isolator itself must necessarily have contact with the common ground.

What current load can the VDI-16 model withstand?
The device is designed to work with currents up to 16 A at a mains voltage of 250 V (alternating current).

Is outdoor installation of the isolator allowed?
The casing has an IP65 protection class (resistant to dust and water jets), but it is recommended to install it in a covered place protected from direct atmospheric exposure.

Does the device work in tandem with other Victron equipment?
Yes, the Victron VDI-16 series isolators combine perfectly with branded charging stations, inverters, and other components of Victron Energy power supply systems.

Is the installation of an isolator required in combined (hybrid) systems?
If your energy system involves connection to a third-party power grid (port, campsite) or to an external portable generator, installing a galvanic isolator is highly desirable for protection against electrochemical corrosion.
