The 4500W Auto 115/230V Isolation Transformer — is a high-tech solution from Victron Energy, designed to ensure absolute electrical safety and protect vessels from destructive galvanic corrosion. The device guarantees complete physical separation between the shore electrical network and the onboard system. This eliminates the need for additional galvanic isolators or polarity indicators.
A key feature of the 4500W Auto modification is its built-in system for automatically detecting shore network voltage, which independently adjusts operating parameters without requiring manual user intervention.
Main advantages of the 4500W Auto model
-
Auto-switching ranges – intelligent automation recognizes the input voltage and instantly selects the required operating mode (115 V or 230 V).
-
Uncompromising corrosion protection – 100% isolation of the vessel's and shore's grounding circuits prevents electrolytic damage to propellers, shafts, and metal hull elements.
-
Integrated Soft Start – a basic feature that prevents the tripping of shore circuit breakers due to the sharp surge in inrush current typical of powerful transformers.
-
Toroidal architecture – an innovative coil design ensures almost silent operation and significantly reduces the size and weight of the device.
-
Onboard network reliability – complete isolation guarantees instantaneous tripping of differential circuit breakers (RCD / GFCI) in the event of short circuits or current leaks to the hull.
-
Circuit breaker – built-in two-pole input overload protection.
Victron Technology Features
Smart voltage selection (Auto-switching)
- If the network voltage is in the range of 88 V – 130 V, the transformer automatically activates the 115 V configuration.
- If the voltage is between 185 V and 250 V, the 230 V operating mode is activated.
- To compensate for losses in cable routes, the output voltage is increased by a factor of 1:1.05.
Protection against galvanic currents
- A direct connection of the shore line's protective ground to the vessel's metal hull forms a galvanic cell, provoking accelerated electrolytic corrosion in the aquatic environment.
- The isolation transformer eliminates this effect: power from the shore is transmitted to the isolated primary winding, and the onboard network takes energy from the secondary winding. No current flows through the ground.
- This problem is relevant for any vessel that has metal parts in contact with water (regardless of the yacht's hull material).
Safety of people on board
- Disconnecting the ground wire without using a transformer is strictly prohibited, as in this case the protective automation (RCD) will not be able to turn off the power in the event of an insulation breakdown to the hull.
- The transformer solves this problem: all metal parts of the vessel are connected to the neutral of the secondary winding. In the event of an accident, the protection triggers instantly.
